Met Live in HD Explained

In addition to our National Theatre Live in HD performances, The Paramount is also proud to offer the Met Live in HD series.

Similar to NT Live shows, Met Live in HD performances are broadcast live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Past performances include Wagner’s infamous Ring cycle, the classic Tristan and Isolde, and the ever-popular Madama Butterfly. These stunning performances are broadcast right from the Met’s stage, and have been a favorite of The Paramount’s opera-loving community since the first broadcast at the Theater in 2008.

This season, we are excited to have four wonderful productions remaining, including:

La Traviata

Saturday, March 11 at 12:55PM
Sonya Yoncheva sings one of opera’s most beloved heroines, the tragic courtesan Violetta, a role in which she triumphed on the Met stage in 2015, opposite Michael Fabiano as her lover, Alfredo, and Thomas Hampson as his father, Germont. Carmen Giannattasio sings later performances of the title role opposite Atalla Ayan, with the great Plácido Domingo as Germont. Nicola Luisotti conducts.

Idomeneo

Saturday, March 25 at 12:55PM
Mozart’s first operatic masterpiece returns to the Met in the classic Jean-Pierre Ponnelle production, conducted by Music Director Emeritus James Levine. The superb ensemble includes Matthew Polenzani as the king torn by a rash vow; mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of his noble son Idamante; soprano Nadine Sierra as Ilia; and soprano Elza van den Heever as the volatile Elettra, who loves Idamante to the bounds of madness.

Eugene Onegin

Saturday, April 22 at 12:55PM
Tchaikovsky’s setting of Pushkin’s timeless verse novel is presented on the Met stage in Deborah Warner’s moving production, starring Anna Netrebko and Peter Mattei* as Tatiana and Onegin. Alexey Dolgov sings the role of Lenski, and Robin Ticciati conducts.

Der Rosenkavalier

Saturday, May 13 at 12:30PM
The dream cast of Renée Fleming as the Marschallin and Elīna Garanča as Octavian star in Strauss’s grandest opera. In his new production, Robert Carsen, the director behind the Met’s recent Falstaff, places the action at the end of the Habsburg Empire, underscoring the opera’s subtext of class and conflict against a rich backdrop of gilt and red damask, in a staging that also stars Günther Groissböck as Baron Ochs. Sebastian Weigle conducts the sparklingly perfect score.

Tickets to these events are $18.00 for students, $22.00 for seniors, and $24.00 for adults.

Sensory-Friendly Events at The Paramount

The Paramount is pleased to offer our audiences an alternative screening option for some events that will provide a positive viewing experience that is welcoming to all individuals, but those specifically with sensory sensitivities. We first offered this viewing option during the holiday season with a sensory-friendly broadcast of The Polar Express! Because of the excitement and overall request for The Paramount to offer more events, like this, we are pleased to say it will become a part of our programming objectives.

What exactly does it mean when a movie is “Sensory-Friendly”?

At The Paramount, a Sensory-Friendly film is shown as produced, but is presented with accommodations such as:

  • Sound levels reduced
  • House lights will remain on at a low level
  • Ear plugs will be available upon request
  • Audience members will be welcome to enter and exit the theater as needed. There will also be a space to walk and move around easily in the lobby.
  • When possible, there will be a quiet room on located on the fourth floor for those who need to take a break from the film.

Join us for a sensory-friendly screening of Disney’ Pixar’s Toy Story [G] this Sunday, March 5 at 11:30AM. Tickets are available here.

For more information, please call the Box Office at 434.979.1333.

Thank you to UVA’s Autism Theatre Project for partnering with The Paramount to create a positive experience for our sensory friendly screening of Toy Story.

Open Captions – Tell Us What You Think!

This year, we are excited to roll out several new initiatives to make it easier for our patrons to tell us what they think and what they would like to see at the Theater – specifically using surveys! Last week at Decades Entertainment’s presentation of Decades Rewind, we were happy to receive great feedback from patrons, including a request to make available films with open captioning.

This feedback is important to us, and we are proud to say that The Paramount has previously offered many captioned movies such as Titanic, Big, and Slumdog Millionaire. We would be equally proud to offer more captioned films like this in the future!

In the spirit of gathering patron feedback, we would like to ask for your suggestions on which films should be shown with open captioning. Tell us what you’d like to see! Email us at info@theparamount.net, call us at 434.979.1333, or message us on Facebook, or in our live chat feature on www.theparamount.net.

Additionally, don’t forget to fill out our surveys, which will be available in the playbills at all of our performances; in the upcoming newsletters which will be mailed to supporters and displayed in the Box Office; and at our feedback podiums in the Lobby and first floor of the Theater. Your feedback is always welcome and appreciated.

Join The Paramount for Free Community Events!

In Honor of a Uniquely Kind Character

Did you know?

Today is National Caregivers Day! In that spirit, we’d like to honor one of our favorite fictional caregivers, Amélie!

Played by the striking Audrey Tautou, the subtly eccentric title character of the 2001 award-winning French film is a shy but thoughtful young woman whose selfless acts make her a special kind of caregiver. A grieving widow, a recluse artist, and a mysterious man in the Metro station all become the subjects of Amélie’s kindness – when it’s not getting her into trouble.

Inhabit the streets of Montmartre with this intriguing caregiver when we screen Amélie [R] on Sunday, February 19 at 2:00PM. Tickets are only $7 and are on sale now!

So, What Exactly is the National Theatre Live in HD Series?

At The Paramount Theater, we strive to offer a wide variety of events, with a clear goal in mind:  to not only provide entertainment and education opportunities, but also to make all types of performance art and beyond accessible to the Charlottesville-Albemarle community.

In manifesting our mission at the forefront of our programming, one important piece of every year’s lineup is the National Theatre Live in HD series. Each year, The Paramount broadcasts live performances from London’s West End. Past performances include Hamlet starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Of Mice and Men starring James Franco and Chris O’Dowd, and Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge starring Mark Strong.

With every National Theatre performance, audiences can expect well-known and critically acclaimed productions, award-winning actors, and incredible sets. Though the productions (which are performed in London) are not played in real time, they are expertly filmed so that when they appear on the big screen at The Paramount the show truly comes to life in Charlottesville.

We are thrilled to offer three incredible productions in the National Theatre Live in HD series at The Paramount in the upcoming months, including:

Amadeus

Saturday, February 25 at 7:00PM
Lucian Msamati (Luther, Game of Thrones, NT Live: The Comedy of Errors) plays Salieri in Peter Shaffer’s iconic play, broadcasting live from the National Theatre with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a rowdy young prodigy, arrives in Vienna, the music capital of the world – and he’s determined to make a splash.

Saint Joan

Sunday, April 2 at 7:00PM

Hedda Gabler

Sunday, April 23 at 7:00PM

Hedda and Tesman have just returned from their honeymoon and the relationship is already in trouble. Trapped but determined, Hedda tries to control those around her, only to see her own world unravel.
